Job Summary
Continue to innovate and develop the esteemed 54-year-old Public Service Intern Program (PSIP) sponsored by the University Career Center. Direct planning and execution of two separate Programs via close supervision of three student coordinators for the 120+ students selected annually to participate in the year-long program culminating in internships in Washington, DC and Lansing, MI. Develop bi-weekly/monthly meeting agendas that focus on self-discovery, understanding the public sector, developing and implementing career tools, tapping into professional networks, professionalism on the job, and navigating urban environments (Washington, DC). Work with external stakeholders (GWU Housing, UM Alumni Clubs, DC and Lansing employers) on the internship and educational aspects of the Program. Annually, renegotiate housing contracts with GWU Housing. Work with campus stakeholders (Office of Financial Aid, UM Development, UM Government Relations, LSA, College of Engineering, Ford School) on advancing the Program and removing barriers for student participation. Make determinations on scholarship funding specifically for PSIP students. Engage with UM alumni interested in PSIP to further develop the PSIP Scholarship Fund. Continue to cultivate relationships with DC and Lansing employers to expand the PSIP internship database to ensure that UM students are actively considered for internship and permanent positions. Actively engage with campus partners on shared agendas related to public service careers and students' interest in this arena. Contribute to the broader UCC mission via participation in select coaching appointments, developing educational materials (Career Tracks) on Government Careers, sponsoring/facilitating workshops, building out employer participation in fairs, and leading DC Immersion trips, as requested.
Responsibilities*
Program Management and Supervision 30%
- Supervise three student coordinators. Set goals, outline expectations, create timelines and ensure follow through on responsibilities while in Ann Arbor, Washington, DC, and Lansing
- Launch new Lansing arm of PSIP including all aspects of the program: employer development, internship opportunities, alumni contacts, program development, campus relations, and fundraising
- Lead student coordinators to establish a PSIP format and timelines to accomplish program goals
- Lead the PSIP (DC) student selection processes and collaborate with PSIP coordinators in selecting program participants
- Lead the PSIP (Lansing) student selection processes and collaborate with PSIP coordinators in selecting program participants
- Educate coordinators and work on effective promotional efforts to encourage diversity in the applicant pool
- Select a diverse, talented cohort of 100+ students to represent UM in DC in a myriad of internship opportunities
- Select a diverse, talented cohort of 10-15+ students to represent UM in Lansing in a myriad of internship opportunities
- Work with Office of Financial Aid to disperse available scholarships by identifying PSIP participants with demonstrated need
- Schedule regular supervisory meetings with student coordinators
- Promptly respond to all written and verbal inquiries related to PSIP
- Strengthen and engage PSIP alumni in ongoing opportunities to be connected to the program through invitations to participate in career panels, serve as summer mentors, offer summer

External Relationships 30%
- Work with Office of Financial Aid to disperse available scholarships by identifying PSIP participants with demonstrated need
- Work with UM Schools/Colleges to determine what financial aid is available to expand opportunities for students
- Oversee communication (ie. email communication, newsletters, social media efforts) to alumni, PSIP families and employers
- Strengthen and engage PSIP alumni in ongoing opportunities to be connected to the program through invitations to participate in career panels, serve as summer mentors, offer summer internship opportunities, and connect informally with students
- Develop, manage and facilitate a new alumni board including 2-3 meetings per year, monthly newsletters and other communication, involving members in student and program development
- Conduct site visits in DC and Lansing, and maintain/establish relationships with public sector employers to learn about internship experiences (new and existing)
- Professionally represent PSIP and the University Career Center to students, employers, staff and alumni at on-campus events, in DC, and in Lansing.
- Work closely with UM Government Relations to launch and develop a new Lansing arm of PSIP
- Build on existing and launch new development efforts to expand student scholarships and program support to enhance learning opportunities for students
Career Counseling/Coaching 15%
- Develop interesting ways of bringing the world of work to the students to help inform their thinking and develop clarity in their planning
- Assist students in understanding and reflecting on the transferability of their academic coursework as they explore possible next steps, and work with them to articulate the benefits of their academic preparation to multiple audiences
- Contribute to student learning, development, and enhanced educational experiences through working closely with them to better understand the process of making thoughtful career decisions
- Engage with clients at all phases of their career development. Provide appropriate referrals for students to other agencies if assistance needed is beyond career counseling
- Utilize knowledge of social identity and research to maximize participation of a diverse student community to create a positive learning environment for all students' includes having an informed perspective regarding issues of race, ethnicity, gender orientation, sexual orientation, ability, and citizenship status
- Contribute to students' knowledge base of the public sector through the creation and curation of information through the development of written materials (ie Career Tracks, PSIP newsletters)
- Act as a resource to the staff, creating programs and materials that keep staff abreast of trends, resources, and tools related to public sector opportunities
Workshop/Event Facilitation 15%
- Oversee the promotion and marketing of PSIP to attract a cohort of diverse participants, including participation in campus events (ie. Festifall and PSIP mass meetings)
- Guide and facilitate monthly participant meetings and semester events in coordination with student coordinators for PSIP (DC)

- Connect current student participants with PSIP alumni on campus through intentional mentor activities, panels and networking events
- Assist coordinators in creating sessions on resumes and cover letter development, interviewing skills, timelines for internship searches and developing writing samples to ensure students' success in securing DC and Lansing internships
- Educate students on a range of professional issues including organizational skills, professional etiquette, decision-making strategies, and professionalism in the workplace
- With coordinators, develop a robust summer programming slate including alumni mentor reception, DC and Lansing speaker series, and educational site visits, and select visits to key internship offices
- Coordinate UCC Immersion trips to Washington DC as requested. Leverage employer contacts and knowledge of the DC and UM alumni base for students exploring the public sector Manage all details in design advance of the Immersion and on-site details while in DC

Data Management and Telling the PSIP story 10%
- Establish learning outcomes for the Program based on UCC and Student Life designated outcomes
- Conduct pre and post tests using Qualtrics to determine student growth and achievement in established areas
- Create systems for maintaining and tracking information including employer spreadsheets, alumni-student mentor matching, student internship placements, fundraising efforts
- Use the information to tell the rich history of PSIP, to impact fund raising, student involvement, and alumni participation in student opportunities and development
Required Qualifications*
- Master's degree fields related to career development and or public service that include the broad-based study of theory and research in student development, social identity and student learning
- Minimum 2 years professional-level experience career coaching, counseling and/or advising
- 2-3 years of experience in facilitating group process, programming, and program management including overall strategy development and implementation
- 2-3 years of experience in program design based on learning objectives and evaluation; and experience managing an area/service in an organization that places a high value on quality customer service, team orientation, intentional planning, continuous improvement, and puts students at the center
- 1-2 years supervisory experience; and experience in a complex, fast-paced office with multiple student populations including undecided students, first generation students, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, first year students and international students
- Demonstrated organizational skills
- Awareness of/experience with the public sector and government opportunities, employment trends (generally and within the public sector/government) possess an understanding how the world of work is organized
- Ability to contribute to a diverse environment of colleagues and students representing diverse populations (e.g. nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, gender and sexual orientation, abilities, class, and other social identities). Demonstrate an appreciation of, and a sensitivity to, cultural differences
- Familiarity with computers and relevant software
- Experience working with upper-level professionals, including but not limited to, university administrators, association directors, legislators, distinguished UM alumni

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility
This position has oversight of the student temporary employment approximately $12,000 annual budget, as well as input into scholarship awards (approximately $15,000 annually) for student interns demonstrating financial need.
Working conditions
Evening work is required in this role (bi-weekly)
Travel to Washington, DC, Lansing and other out-of-state locations (on occasion) is expected, upon request of the unit. Depending on the distance travel is by car, in state, and by air when out of state. Travel occurs mostly during the business week but may also take place during weekends.
This position requires the ability to work with a wide range of student concerns, including difficult clients, as well as the ability to work with external stakeholders to navigate demands/expectations
Physical requirements
Occasionally, there may be a need to transport heavy boxes weighing up to fifteen (15) pounds

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/23 or after, will not be eligible for the university salary/merit plan in 2023 unless otherwise notified.
